Scott Hessels and his studio FugitiveColor is an American artist based in the US, Portugal, and Hong Kong. His artworks have shown internationally in exhibitions focusing on technology and those presenting fine arts. His recognitions include patents for developed technologies, references in books on new media art, and coverage in cultural media like Wired and Discover.
He produced pioneering work in the fields of online streaming and locative media and has mixed cinema with a span of emerging technologies. His practice includes multi-year collaborations with leading science organizations that result in diverse creative formats including kinetic sculpture, AR/VR experiences, generative animation, robotics, public installations, and immersive environments.
He is a distinguished educator in the field of New Media Art, winner of the Teaching Excellence Award. He taught in Design Media Arts at UCLA, The School of Art Design and Media in Singapore and The School of Creative Media in Hong Kong, a leading institution in the recent wave of Arts-Tech across Asia.
As executive producer of the Extreme Environments Program, he organizes art/science expeditions to remote, environmentally significant sites, partnering art students with field research scientists. He’s led expeditions to the Himalayas, the Mojave Desert, hidden caves in Vietnam, the Solomon Islands, and Antarctica. The resulting exhibitions interpreted the scientific findings as new media artworks, raising cognizance about climate issues to millions across Asia.
From 1987 to 2004, he was a founding member, producer and writer for Damaged Californians, a Los Angeles-based video, film, and performance collective. Producing with P. James Keitel, he released several short-form art videos, feature films and experimental documentaries, performed in live events around Los Angeles, and produced innovative online works.
